Ford Bell, President of the American Association of Museums, his wife Amy, and Richard Sims, Director of MHS. The occasion was the gala reopening of the Smithsonian Museum of American History, featuring a new exhibit of the star-spangled banner that inspired Francis Scott Key's poem, which became our national anthem. The huge flag that flew over Fort McHenry in the Baltimore harbor carried 15 stars in 1814. Only 14 remain, as one star and much of the border fabric was given away in the 1800s as memorial "snippings."
