Research Requests

If you are not able to visit the Research Center, our staff will research your request for a small fee. Fees cover the staff time required to conduct the research, whether or not an answer is found. Patrons will receive a written summary of research performed. Fees are non-refundable.

What kind of research do you need us to do?

General Research   Look for information on a specific person, topic, or event, such as newspaper articles, archival materials, and books.

Genealogy Research   Look for information on your family history, including obituaries, city directory searches, or census records.

Photograph Research   Look specifically for historic images.

Business Entity Research   Look for information on a business that was incorporated in Montana. These records include articles of incorporation, annual reports and other fiscal information for domestic and foreign companies who conducted business in Montana from the 1860s to the present. Note: Our collection includes records only for inactive businesses; records for active businesses are held by the Montana Secretary of State's office.

Legislative Research   Look for the history of a specific Montana statute or bill. Please note that all legislative research requests are $25 USD.

What will it cost?

Each research request includes up to two hours of research and 10 photocopies.

  • Montana resident: $10 USD*
  • Non-resident: $25 USD
  • MHS Member: Two free research requests per year

* All legislative research requests are $25 USD.

If you need extensive research (more than two hours), please hire an independent researcher.
